A Term of Academic Growth and Achievement
Term 3 has been a season of academic success and personal growth for students at Fairbridge College Kalgoorlie. Our staff worked closely with each student, helping them achieve progress in subjects that matter most to them and offering encouragement every step of the way.
Improving Literacy and Numeracy Skills
This term, our students demonstrated marked improvements in literacy and numeracy, subjects essential for future success. Thanks to a blend of personalised learning strategies and small-group support, many students were able to reach new levels of comprehension and mathematical skill. Teachers provided individualised feedback, helping students build confidence and competence in areas they previously found challenging. These achievements speak to the dedication of both staff and students, with parents also reporting positive changes in their children’s confidence and skills.
Celebrating Creative Achievements
Art and creative expression are vital parts of life at Fairbridge College, providing students with a healthy outlet for self-expression and personal growth. This term, students participated in a special Creative Arts Showcase, where they had the opportunity to present their original works in mediums like painting, sculpture, and digital design. The showcase was a resounding success, with parents and teachers attending to celebrate each student’s hard work and creativity. Beyond the artworks themselves, students gained valuable experience in presentation and public speaking, skills that will serve them well in the future.
Innovative Learning Programs Spark Interest
Fairbridge College takes pride in offering hands-on, innovative programs that help students see the real-world applications of their studies. This term was no exception, with engaging learning opportunities across multiple disciplines.
STEM in Action: Coding, Robotics, and Environmental Science
Term 3 saw the launch of our new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) initiative, offering students an immersive experience in areas like coding, robotics, and environmental science. Students had the opportunity to design simple code, build robotic models, and explore ecological concepts through hands-on experiments. The program was met with enthusiastic responses, sparking curiosity and excitement about how these subjects play a role in everyday life. By exposing students to STEM, we’re equipping them with skills that are increasingly important in today’s digital world, fostering analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Outdoor Learning Adventures
We believe that outdoor learning is essential for a well-rounded education, and this term, students had numerous opportunities to explore the great outdoors. A highlight of the term was an adventurous bushwalking trip, where students learned about local plant and animal species and environmental conservation practices. The outdoor excursions also included team-building activities designed to improve communication and trust within student groups. Whether navigating trails, identifying wildlife, or working together on problem-solving tasks, students learned valuable skills while experiencing the natural beauty surrounding Kalgoorlie.
Prioritising Mental Health and Well-being
At Fairbridge College, we recognise that academic success is deeply connected to students’ mental and emotional well-being. That’s why we’ve made mental health support an integral part of our school environment.
Mindfulness and Resilience Workshops
This term, students participated in mindfulness and resilience workshops aimed at equipping them with tools to handle stress and emotional challenges. These workshops taught practical techniques for managing stress, understanding emotions, and developing resilience to life’s ups and downs. Students learned about breathing exercises, positive affirmations, and grounding techniques, which they found valuable for managing anxiety both in and outside the classroom. Parents and teachers have noticed positive changes, with students reporting that they feel better equipped to handle everyday stress.
Building Strong Peer Support Networks
In addition to formal mental health programs, Fairbridge College introduced a peer support initiative, creating a supportive environment where students could connect and share experiences. Through this program, students formed mentorship pairs and small support groups, where they could freely discuss their struggles and successes. This initiative was particularly beneficial for new students, who were able to build connections and feel a sense of belonging within the school community. Many students expressed that having a peer support system made a positive impact on their school experience, making them feel valued and understood.
Building Strong Community Connections
Community engagement is one of Fairbridge College’s core values. This term, we focused on fostering relationships between our students and the Kalgoorlie community, helping students develop a sense of social responsibility and pride in giving back.
Volunteering and Community Service Projects
Our students participated in various community service projects, with activities ranging from local clean-up events to volunteering at aged care facilities. These experiences allowed students to understand the impact of their actions, develop empathy, and connect with people from diverse backgrounds. Many students reported feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that they were making a positive difference in their community. The relationships formed through these volunteering activities have strengthened the bond between Fairbridge College and the Kalgoorlie community.
Successful Fundraising Events
In Term 3, students organised a series of fundraising events to support local charities and causes. From bake sales to fun runs, students took on the challenge of planning and executing events, with guidance from teachers and staff. These events not only raised funds for important causes but also gave students an opportunity to develop project management, teamwork, and leadership skills. The success of these events is a testament to the dedication and generosity of the Fairbridge College community, with all proceeds going towards local community services that benefit residents in need.
