This qualification reflects the role of skilled outdoor recreation leaders who lead and supervise dependent participants in a range of outdoor activities — such as abseiling, climbing, canoeing, kayaking, archery, and high ropes — according to predetermined activity plans, adjusting as required to suit conditions and participant abilities.
Participants develop practical skills in planning, instruction, and risk management to ensure safe, inclusive, and engaging outdoor adventure experiences.
Entry Requirements
Students must be over 17 years old and currently employed in a role that involves delivering outdoor recreation activities, specifically abseiling, high ropes, archery, canoeing, kayaking and rock climbing.
While no formal prior qualifications are required, learners should demonstrate a genuine interest in outdoor leadership and possess a level of physical fitness to safely participate and lead outdoor activities.

Delivered in a combination of face to face, online, and workplace learning over 2 years full-time.

A Statement of Attainment will be issued for any units of competency successfully completed if the full qualification is not achieved.
The unit clusters listed below form part of this full qualification and can also be undertaken as standalone cluster options or short courses. This flexibility allows learners to complete targeted skill sets without enrolling in the entire qualification, or to use the clusters as a pathway towards full completion.
Cluster Unit – Climbing (Artificial)
A Statement of Attainment will be issued on completion of one or more of these unit clusters.
Cluster Unit – Abseiling (Artificial)
A Statement of Attainment will be issued on completion of one or more of these unit clusters.
Cluster Unit – High Ropes
A Statement of Attainment will be issued on completion of one or more of these unit clusters.
The clusters are each offered as a 3- 5-day short course at Fairbridge, depending on previous experience, to cover practical training and theory. Then students would need to complete a logbook of their abseiling/climbing or challenge course hours (x25hours minimum) before the final practical assessment either onsite at their workplace or here at Fairbridge. Short courses can take between 6-12 weeks to complete (depending on experience and availability to record the required logbook hours).
